What is tinnitus?
Tinnitus is commonly described as a ringing sound, but some people may report other sounds, such as roaring or buzzing. It means the perception of sound in the ear when no external sound is present in the environment. Many individuals experience tinnitus on different occasions, and some report constant perception of it. Tinnitus is common among hearing-impaired individuals, with surveys estimating that 10 to 25% of adults have it. Children can also have it. Tinnitus is not a disease. It is a symptom that an individual may experience.
