Is your drinking water safe during the rainy season?

Every year we wait for rain. After the scorching heat of summer, the rains bring relief and welcome pleasant weather. The monsoon season carries with it a wave of delight. Everyone around becomes happy. But, once it affects our daily life, it seems to be a threat because rains need more hygiene and cleaning everywhere. Water logging, traffic delays, and various diseases worsen the problem. Rain is necessary but like every season, it has its drawbacks, one of which is water contamination. With heavy rains all around, the risk of water-borne infections is more.

Why one should take precautions while Drinking Water in Monsoons?

The water we get from the tap is usually not safe to drink. Many people feel that boiling water and using removable tap filters are the best ways to protect themselves against waterborne infections. These methods, however, are not enough to treat all the pollutants. Although boiling kills germs in the water, it does not eliminate organic and inorganic contaminants.

So lets us see the reasons why you should not drink regular tap water.

Tap water is not pure enough

Water in cities is treated, but it travels a long distance to reach the tap via old, rusted, and dirty pipes. The water in tanks and taps contains rust, bacteria, and many contaminants that a regular tap filter cannot remove. This water can be used for washing, bathing, cleaning, and other tasks, but it is not safe to drink directly.

Rainwater contains germs and other pollutants.

While rainwater is useful for many things, it is not as pure as we think. Rain can wash a variety of impurities but the rainwater is contaminated with bacteria, parasites, viruses, and chemicals that can make us sick, and can cause outbreaks of any diseases.

Regular Boiling Water cannot kill all the contaminants

Boiling was once thought to be the finest method of water purification, however, present contamination has rendered this method obsolete. While boiling kills germs, it has little effect on excessive chlorine levels or other pollutants in the water. Furthermore, water must be boiled for 20 minutes to effectively eliminate disease-causing microorganisms. This boiling process is not practical on a daily basis when you have a lot of other things to do. Also when you leave the water in the vessel to cool off, bacteria and germs in the air can contaminate it again.

Affects the immune system

People become ill frequently during the monsoon season due to weather-related factors. Rain causes water logging, which allows mosquitoes and flies to reproduce. Malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, and other diseases are spread by these insects. Water pollution also occurs when rainwater seeps through various places. When one drinks contaminated water for a long time, it can harm the bladder, kidneys liver, and lungs. When water is consumed untreated, it causes infections such as food poisoning, typhoid, viral infections, and so on, and your immune system has to work overtime to combat the infections.

Every year, a large number of people fall ill because of consuming impure water. When temperature changes or humidity increases, it is essential that you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. However, even if you drink enough water, you may become ill for a variety of reasons. It is thus advisable to be careful and take precautions than regret it later.

Water contamination is at its worst during the monsoon season. Waterborne disorders like Typhoid, Hepatitis (Jaundice), Gastroenteritis, Cholera, and Diarrhea are caused by contaminated food and water. Drinking water contaminated with disease-causing bacteria is a common cause of many illnesses. As a result, taking necessary steps throughout the monsoon season and ensuring the intake of pure, safe, and healthy water is important. It is also important to boost our immunity to seasonal changes.
